A ten percent federal tax on the portion of a car's price that exceeds $34,000. For example, the buyer of a car with a price tag of $44,000 would have to pay a luxury tax of $1,000--that is, ten percent of $10,000. This tax only applies to passenger vehicles with a gross empty vehicle weight below 6,000 pounds.
