About This Site

The Tankers' Homepage is about strategic/simulation gaming and military history. But it is our experience that these subjects cover a far greater number of other topics as well. There are few flight sim fans who do not enjoy an air show or an episode of Wings and there are few historians who do not enjoy a good World at War episode. Wargaming and military history are more than just hobbies, they are an education and an experience. It is our hope that this site will convey just a fraction of the depth of these two subjects.

Submission Guidelines

As hard as we will try, The Tankers' Hompage cannot succeed without your support. We need submissions for all topic areas. Below are some of the details for submitting material for the various sections. If you have any questions please just send us a message.

Note: We hold the right to edit all submissions that we wish to post and all submissions become the property of Gorilla Publishing (unless of course it is material for which you hold the copyright). As always, please do not submit copyrighted material (unless you hold the copyright); any amount of plagiarism is strictly forbidden and any such material will be rejected.

Wargaming

Reviews | Art of Simulation | Other

Reviews

We will publish only reviews of wargames or simulations. We will not post reviews of action, science fiction, fantasy, or very generic strategy games. Wargame reviews are not limited to the subject areas/companies that we currently have posted. If it is a wargame we want it on our page.

Wargame reviews (board or computer games) are composed of two main types, First Look and Full Reviews. First Look reviews are done when one has played a game for less than ten hours or feels that there are still significant areas of the game unexplored. Full Reviews are those made when one feels he/she has played the game a sufficient amount to gain a basic mastery of it. Length can be almost anything, but if it is over ten pages, it better be really good!

For both review types please include the following information: full game title, publisher/developer, media (disk, CD, PC or MAC, etc), a description of the game components, details on the rulebook/manual, scenarios/campaigns included, a description of game play, any bugs or errata found, opinion on game's historical accuracy and simulation, etc. Also give us your full name and, if desired, your email address (if you want it listed).

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.

Art of Simulation

Submissions for the Art of Simulation section can be almost anything pertaining to gaming. Check the current content for ideas and examples. Our only requirements here, as always, is that the material be original. Length can be as much or as little as needed for the topic.

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting. Include your full name and email address (if you want it listed).

Other

If you have an idea that does not fit in any category let us know. An example is a fictionalized account of a wargame scenario or some original art. As long as it is well written and interesting we'll consider it!

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.

Military History

Stories from Veterans | Book Reviews/Reading List | Articles of War | News & Current Events | Scholarly Military History Papers

Stories from Veterans

This section contains stories from veterans of the armed services about their own experiences. Submissions to this section can be on any military subject and of any length. The purpose of this section is to provide those who have not served in the military (or not in war time) a glimpse at what it is really like. War stories, operations, day-to-day life, job descriptions (MOS), technical information (You really liked the M19? Then tell us all about it!), etc.

Please, no fiction (fictional work should be submitted for the Articles of War section), and we are taking it on your honor that the stories are true to the best of your knowledge. Please include your full name and email (if you want it listed).

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.

All submissions become the property of Gorilla Publishing (unless previously copyrighted).

Book Reviews/Reading List

This section contains short reviews of books on all military topics. The Reading List contains a list of book citations without reviews.

For the Book Reviews please include a full bibliographic citation (see below) and a one paragraph or longer review. The review should include a description of the book topic, review of author's research, review of any photos or illustrations, and a comparison to other similar works (if possible). If possible, also include the author(s) background on the subject (see below).

Submissions for the Reading List should just include as full a citation as possible.

Review and Citation Example:

Blumenson, Martin. The Battle of the Generals: The Untold Story of the Falaise Pocket-The Campaign That Should Have Won World War Two. New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc., 1993. Pp. 288, index, photos, maps

Martin's overall thesis in this book is that if the Allies had closed the Falaise pocket quickly enough they would have trapped most of the German army and forced the war to a close in 1944. The principle reason for this blunder, according to Blumenson, is the interplay between Eisenhower, Montgomery, Bradley, and Patton. The amount of infighting and political bickering among the chain of command was excessive enough to cause not only a loss of strategic and operational foresight but even an inability to act. Blumenson is never really successful at convincing the reader of the critical importance of the battle, but his demonstrations and descriptions of the interactions of the Allied commanding generals is excellent. The book does suffer from a lack of good maps, and thus the reaccountings of many of the actions are difficult to follow without a good atlas. The maps provided often do a poor job of illustrating the actions described in the text. Blumenson seems to rely heavily on Max Hastings for much of the books analysis outside of the interaction of the generals, but perhaps, for the purpose of his thesis, this is just as well. Overall, the book is an intriguing look inside the Allied high command but only an average campaign account. Blumenson is a professional historian and has held chairs at both the Naval and Army war colleges.

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.

Articles of War

This section contains military related articles that may be non-ficiton, fiction, or poetry. We will accept material on almost any military topic or era.

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.

All submissions become the property of Gorilla Publishing.

News & Current Events

This section contains snippets of current news topics pertaining to defense or the military. Examples include the first test flight of a new fighter, the launching a new ship, troop deployments, congressional actions, etc. These should be short statements and should include the source of the information (NBC news, New York Times, Usenet posting, etc.).

Please send submissions as an email message and inlcude your full name and email address (if you want it listed).

Scholarly Military History Papers

This section contains graduate level and above papers on military history topics. Undergraduate or non-college level papers will be considered on a case by case basis (if you write well, have a good subject, and know how to properly reference a paper then we'll look at it).

Papers can be on any topic and almost any length (if it is over 50 pages we may not have the space). Military History papers must be properly referenced according to the Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian, or other qualified source.

Submissions must be as a text (ASCII) or MS Word file (PC format only). References should not be done using the word processor's footnote feature (it is almost impossible to translate to HTML without a lot of effort). Include no formatting except bold, italic, or underline.

Movies

We want reviews for any and all serious military movies (documentary or drama). Movies that are of the "Rambo" or "action" genre are not wanted and will not be posted.

Please include the movie publisher, year of release, length, format (color or B&W), starring actors/actresses and any other relevant information to help someone locate and identify the movie (see current postings for examples). Also indicate what category the movie should be under (see current postings for categories). If we do not have a proper category let us know and we'll add one if we think it is necessary. If you do not have any of the above information that is ok, hopefully someone will see the listing and give us the missing information.

The actual review should be at least a paragraph long and include a description of the subject/plot. If you cannot write a review because you have not seen the movie for a long time or only heard of it that is ok. We're trying to compile a good list of movies and hopefully someone who has seen it can fill in the details.

Please send all submissions as text files (ASCII) or just as an email message. Please do not add any formatting.
