The American Cancer Society recognizes the importance of research and has made its research program one of the cornerstones of its activities. The Research Department of the American Cancer Society receives between 3,000 and 4,000 investigator-initiated requests for grant support each year. All proposals are subjected to multilevel peer review to identify the most meritorious and innovative to be funded. Applications are initially reviewed by the appropriate Scientific Advisory Committee and by the Council for Research and Clinical Investigation Awards. Recommendations made by the Council are submitted to the Research and Clinical Investigation Committee of the Board of Directors, who hold the final authority for funding.
Applications for the types of grants listed below may be obtained from your Grants Office on diskette. Only May 1995 revised versions will be accepted for the October 1995 National Research Program deadlines. The American Cancer Society is introducing electronic supplied forms for investigators making grant applications to the National Program. It is suggested that applicants go to their Grants Office with a blank IBM-formatted disk (1.44 Mb or higher) in order to download the application forms of their choice onto their individual diskettes. The grant application forms are provided in WordPerfect, 5.1. If you have problems, you can photocopy the printed forms sent to the Grants Office. Macintosh users can use PC/Exchange or Apple File Exchange conversion packages.
Research Development Program. Rapid funding for a variety of critical and urgent needs in cancer research which cannot be supported quickly through the usual grants program.
Research and Clinical Investigation Grants. For a variety of needs in scientific investigations related to cancer. Generally designed to cover the cost of items such as salaries, special equipment, animals, consumable supplies, and other miscellaneous items required to conduct the proposed research.
Institutional Research Grants. The primary purpose of these grants is to serve as "seed" money to permit the initiation of promising new projects in cancer research by junior investigators.
American Cancer Society International Cancer Research Fellowships. Funds are awarded to the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. These fellowships enable highly qualified investigators from any country in the world to work in collaboration with outstanding scientists in another country.
Postdoctoral Fellowships. To help young investigators qualify for an independent career in cancer research.
Physician's Research Training Fellowships. To improve physicians' research competence.
Junior Clinical Research Award. To provide salary support for clinical investigators just beginning their own independent scientific career. Research must be closely identified with human subjects.
Junior Faculty Research Awards. To provide salary support for investigators just beginning their own independent scientific careers.
Scholar Awards in Cancer Research. Salary support for sabbatical leave that will allow established investigators to study or acquire experience in a scientific field different from, but related to, the area in which the applicant usually works.
Research Professorships. Long-term salary support for outstanding established investigators who have made significant contributions to cancer research and who may reasonably be expected to continue this contribution.
Clinical Research Professorships. Long-term salary support for outstanding established clinical scientists who bring together basic science and clinical approached to the cancer problem.
The Research Professorships and Clinical Research Professorships are the American Cancer Society's most distinguished research awards.
