Proposed FDA Regulation of Tobacco Products

In one of the most historic public health announcements in history, President Clinton stated on August 10, 1995 that his administration is proceeding with strong regulatory proposals on tobacco sales and marketing. The proposal is outlined in the August 10th Federal Register. Its ultimate goal is to reduce smoking by children and adolescents by 50 percent within seven years.

What can you do to support these historic proposals?

Write the Food and Drug Administration with your comments supporting the proposed regulations. Sample letters follow this list. These are just models. It is important that the FDA receive a high volume of comments but it is equally important that the comments are substantive. Please use these letters as a guideline but feel free to personalize. Write your two Senators and your Representative today. Tell them you are strongly in favor of protecting the nation's children from tobacco and therefore support FDA's asserting its jurisdiction over tobacco products.
