Clungs!According to Steve Dickinson, national vice president of public relations for the American Cancer Society, Clungs! is a fun, interactive, educational game. "It gets our messages across while giving teens cool visuals to view as the game progresses," says Dickinson. "Clungs! is also a contest with a grand prize any teen would love: seven hundred dollars worth of CDs and cassettes of his or her choice. That's because the average smoker spends approximately $700 a year on tobacco. We hope kids playing Clungs! will enjoy this game, as well as the other features on our website."
The game of Clungs! features multiple choice questions about smoking. After each correct answer, the blackened lungs of teen characters Lisa and Larry are gradually cleaned out, and through the wonders of digital technology, they become a healthy pink.
"By the time the lungs are back in good shape, those who have played the game have learned some great (and fun) facts about smoking and why they are 'too smart to start'," says Dickinson. "Because this is an engaging rather than a heavy-handed approach, we think the kids (and their parents and teachers) will enjoy it."
The real reason kids will play, however, may not be for the organ transformation but rather for the contest they can enter after playing the game. To be eligible for the contest and to have a chance to win prizes -- from a $700 gift certificate for CDs/cassettes, to a cool mouse pad -- players need to register only once between November 1 and November 16, the day of the Great American Smokeout.
Prize winners will be selected in a random drawing on or about November 16. The grand prize winner will be notified by e-mail and by telephone or regular mail within one week of the drawing date. Other prize winners, also selected at random, will receive prizes by mail soon after November 16.
