The original Dial Up Networking software (DUN) has been updated by Microsoft to address certain problems such as security weaknesses and connection speed. Microsoft has released DUN version 1.3, which addresses these problems. Installation of this patch may increase your download speeds considerably. Almost all of the tweaks performed by advanced users to improve their connection speeds in previous versions of DUN have been included in DUN 1.3.
DUN 1.3 also contains Virtual Private Networking and Direct Cable Connection, which will not be discussed here, as most users of the Complete Internet Toolkit will not need this functionality.
Click here to install DUN 1.3 - After clicking a dialog box will appear asking if you want to RUN or SAVE the file - select RUN and follow the on screen instructions. This process will involve a re-boot of your PC. If during the installation of DUN 1.3 you encounter the “Do you want to keep this file?” dialog box always keep the newer file. (NB We recommend you install DUN 1.3 after you have installed you ISP's software)
Configuring DUN and Network Properties
If you have used the FREE CITK ISP service included with this CDROM then DUN will be configured correctly.
However if you have chosen not to use our ISP service, we can recommend settings which may increase your PC's security and connection speed when connected to the Internet.
Once you have installed DUN, you will need to configure it's settings. These differ from ISP to ISP, and here we will guide you through general changes, which are not specific to your ISP.
To access DUN Click START-PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-DIAL UP NETWORKING
To view the properties of each DUN entry, right click on the DUN icon and from the menu which appears select PROPERTIES
You will see a window similar to the following:-
Confirm the modem type and phone number of the ISP. Next click the Server Type button
You will see the following:-
The settings shown above are generally used by most ISP's, but you should check with your own ISP as to the settings they require. The NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols are not used on the Internet -TCP/IP is the protocol used on the Internet and the others should be de-selected, as enabling them may cause security problems.
Click TCP/IP settings.
Unless your ISP requires it leave these settings as shown above. (Demon Internet in the UK allocate a unique IP addresses to each of their clients - If this is required, your ISP will tell you the IP address)
