Color reproduction in computer systems |
Computers process colors by assigning numbers to each color. When the computer system cannot display full color (16,777,216 colors), it uses a color palette, which is a set of data listing the available colors. Colors not included in the set are converted to the nearest available color, sometimes resulting in a phenomenon known as color melange. |
Some palettes are static, with fixed colors, and others are dynamic, permitting the colors to be changed according to what is displayed. |
A color photograph or picture is unlikely to use all 16,777,216 colors. A palette appropriate for the image will provide satisfactory color reproduction. |
