Process color and spot color

The four CMYK inks, cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and black (K), are used to reproduce the colors of the natural world on most print. This method is called process color printing.

Occasionally, something will be printed using a method called spot color. This is also called custom color and refers to special inks prepared by the ink manufacturing company.

Process colors are used for colors which must be reproduced precisely, or for certain colors which are difficult to reproduce using CMYK, or for corporate logos and other special effects.

The Pantone and the FocolTone color systems both use printed specimen books from which spot colors can be chosen. Spot colors can be specified directly with some types of graphics software.
