The color scheme theory of Johannes Itten

Johannes Itten was a Swiss painter and teacher of color. In 1961 he published his "Color Theory," in which he describes how to harmonize colors, with the emphasis on hue. From the three primary colors of cyan, magenta, and yellow, he designed a hue-wheel of 12 colors. He referred to complementary colors as two-color harmony. He also recognized the three-color harmony of the hues at the points of an equilateral triangle, four-color harmony at the corners of a square, six-color harmony at the corners of a hexagon, etc. His scheme is still useful for understanding color harmony.
