Hue contrast and complementary color contrast

Under natural conditions, we never see an isolated color. The same color affects us differently, depending on the adjacent colors.

Hue contrast

The same color appears differently, depending on the adjacent colors. For example, orange will appear yellower against a red background, and redder if the background is yellow.

Complementary color contrast

If the same shade of gray is placed against a blue background it will appear to have an orange tint; against an orange background it will appear to have a blue tint.
