Measuring color and colorimetrics |
Everyone perceives color in a different way. Our environment also influences our perceptions greatly. How then can we convey accurate information about colors to other people? |
Since colors consist of electromagnetic waves, they can be compared according to the laws of physics. We begin by establishing a standard light source. A light table or viewer are standard sources for illuminating photographs. Several different standard light sources have been established, such as a light source that is the equivalent to average sunlight free from the influences of clouds or sky (color temperature of 5,000 degrees Kelvin). Color is measured as illuminated by these standard light sources. |
It's also possible to measure color using a special instrument called a spectrophotometer. This is used whenever precise color management is required, such as in the colors of automobiles. |
