Red eyes caused by the flash

Red eyes caused by using the flash in a dark area

When you use a flash, sometimes people's eyes will appear red. In a dark setting, in which the person's pupils are wide open, the flash's light will enter the eyes and reflect red from the retinas. This can be prevented by the automatic pre-flashing feature of some built-in flashes. If you don't have this feature, you should select the brightest possible location. Indoors this means turning on as many lights as possible. Outdoors this means choosing the most illuminated spot. Choose a setting in which the pupils are contracted; this will serve to prevent the red-eye effect even if the flash is used.
