File format suited for the photo image

Because the GIF format is limited to 256 colors, when the image contains many shades of the same hue, the color gradation deteriorates. JPEG files are better suited for handling photo images.

JPEG is a non-reversible compressed file, which permits a choice in compression quality; the compression can be raised considerably. However, if the compression is too high, the image quality will deteriorate. Hence, the compression should be kept at a level where the image quality does not deteriorate, while not overburdening the transmission line.

Because JPEG files are non-reversible, compressed images cannot be restored to their original state. Therefore, the master image should be preserved in the uncompressed state. Note that the file size of the photo image, when stored in the GIF format, could be large.
