When scanning an image, a "Not enough virtual memory space" error message appears on the screen

Error message indicating memory shortage

This message indicates that there is not enough hard disk space to perform the scan. This problem is unrelated to your computer's system memory. To cope with this problem, check to see whether there is spare capacity in the virtual memory for handling this application.

350 MB is required for scanning a full-color image of A3 size at 800 dpi.

When you import an image with unnecessarily high resolution, the memory capacity requirement will be high; to cope with this, reduce the image resolution.
