Understanding Scanners/Color imageIndexHome

The screen image and printed output do not match the original image

Matching the original, the image on the monitor, and the printed output is very difficult, even for the professional printer. This problem is caused by the following factors:

  • The color characteristics and gradation characteristics (gamma) of the scanner, monitor and printer all differ.
  • The lighting environment under which the image is seen from the scanner, monitor and printed output differs. Also the different color temperatures of indoor fluorescent light and incandescent light influences the way the eye perceives the image.

This problem can be fixed by rescanning after changing the driver's settings or by using image editing software.

Adjusting color levels in Photoshop

Colors can be matched by using color-calibration and color-matching software such as ICM for Windows and ColorSync for the Macintosh.
