Notes
Rejected by the armed forces of his own country, Unger went to Canada and joined the Royal Flying Corps in June 1917. Flying a Sopwith Camel, Unger shot down a Fokker D.VII piloted by Kurt Schonfelder on 26 June 1918.

Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC)
"A gallant and skillful officer. On 30 October, separated from his patrol owing to engine trouble, he was attacked by seven Fokkers; undaunted by the odds against him, he, without hesitation, engaged them, and by skillful maneuvering, shot one down to crash. He has accounted for nine enemy aeroplanes and one kite balloon." DFC citation, London Gazette, 8 February 1919
