| | Grey joined the Lafayette Flying Corps on 17 June 1917. After serving with Spa93, he transferred to the United States Air Service on 13 March 1918. On 1 August 1918, Grey was assigned to the 213th Pursuit Squadron as a flight commander. The only ace to serve in this squadron, he scored five confirmed victories while flying the SPAD S.XIII. |

While leading a patrol of three machines, Captain Grey observed a formation of our bombing planes hard-pressed by twelve of the enemy.
