McMaking served in France with the Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons in 1915. He was gazetted to the Lincolnshire Yeomanry as a Second Lieutenant in February 1916.  Later that year, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Until 45 Squadron received Sopwith Camels, McMaking flew the Sopwith 1╜ Strutter. Credited with six Albatros D.III's, he was killed in action when his his Camel was shot down in flames by Werner Voss of Jasta 10.
