Right: Highly detailed view of part of the canyon floor only 1.5 km across from the centre of the view on the left, as seen by Mars Global Surveyor. A swarm of 50 m wide sand dunes oriented northwest to southeast can be made out, which indicates either a southwesterly or a northeasterly prevailing wind. There are some larger hillocks sticking up through the sand, which could be blocks that slid off the canyon walls during landslides. | |
