Class 1: Tools of the Internet (6 hrs)

Recommended pre-requisites:  

-- Experience using Email and the Web
-- Familiarity with personal computer
-- Experience using word processor software

Course Description:

The Internet is everywhere, and it’s not just the Web! This course is for the beginner to the advanced user, and is the foundation for all the subsequent classes.  Students explore the history of the Internet, and learn the fundamental protocols responsible for making it work. In depth coverage of the following protocols: FTP, HTTP, XHTML, URL, CGI and SQL gives students a basis for understanding how the Internet works. Course also includes an overview of the major Web browsers, Internet file types, e-mail, security, and search engines. 

Class 2: Building a Business on the Web (6 hrs)

Course Goals:
This course will examine comprehensive business fundamentals of successful E-commerce. The course will focus on topics useful for business professionals seeking to contribute more effectively to their company's Internet initiative as well as entrepreneurs seeking to earn revenue through their own E-commerce enterprises. Course concepts and skills are learned through hands-on exercises/projects.

Course Learning Objectives
1.Students will be able to demonstrate:
    How to apply sound fundamentals of e-commerce using a business plan
    How to develop products and services from original concept through rollout
    How to analyze your potential markets and customers
    How to develop a comprehensive “digital strategy”
    How to perform cost, benefit and risk analyses
    How to conduct on-line marketing using the “magnet effect”
    How to decide whether to “do it yourself” or outsource?

Course Description:

Part two of this module covers advantages and disadvantages of doing business on the Web. Students are introduced to business fundamentals and the development of a business plan. The plan is tailored to an Internet based business. Additionally, students learn when a database is required, when to do the work yourself and when to outsource, how to market a site and what it all costs. Learn to guarantee your business success through adopting a proven digital strategy. Punctuated by case studies and real-life examples, this class is ideally suited for the aspiring digital entrepreneur.
