SYSTEM UPGRADES

For the past few months we have watched the traffic on our system grow at an impressive rate. While we are quite pleased with the way our equipment has kept up with the volume, we are in the process of installing several upgrades so that we can continue to handle all of the page requests we receive. Here is a description of the upgrades:
  1. On Friday, December 8 we installed an additional 16MB of RAM in our Server.
  2. We have ordered an upgrade in our Digital Circuit, the pipeline to the Internet, from 56K to 256K.
  3. Within the next two weeks we will be installing a software utility on our Server which will increase the effective speed of our processor.
All of these steps are made to assure that we can serve more users more quickly.

For those of you with a technical interest, here's the lowdown on our system: The studyabroad.com World Wide Web Server operates on a Macintosh Power PC Workgroup Server 8150/110. We now have 32 MB of RAM and a 1Gigabyte Hard Drive. The Server Software is Starnine's WebStar. We also utilize CGIs written by numerous parties. Our connection to the Internet is via a 56K Digital Line, soon to be upgraded to 256K.

TRAFFIC REPORT

The week ending December 8 was a record week for us. We served a total of 8,079 pages. This was a 39% increase over our previous high, which was the previous week. To date, we have served more than 50,000 pages of information. (Note: this is PAGES, not "hits"--Often Web statistics will include total hits which can include graphics as well as pages of data. A page can contain any amount of graphics, all of which count as "hits," as a result one page may result in 20 hits.)

During the month of November we served 20,870 pages, up from 13,000 in October. In November we had users visit our site from Educational Institutions in all 50 of the United States as well as 42 foreign countries.
