The location of the insertion point determines the effect of the Tab key:

By default, when you press Tab while the insertion point is in text, you enter a 2-em horizontal space. You can change the default so that you enter a horizontal space of the width you specify. You set the defaults for the Tab key from the Edit tab sheetEdit_defaults.tex in the User SetupUser_setup.tex dialog box.
