Why Are These Options Provided?

Scientific Notebook stores characters using their Unicode values. Unicode is the new international universal character set that contains over 64,000 characters. The Universal font that is supplied with Scientific Notebook, tciuni, is a Unicode font that contains the mathematical and other special symbols used by the program. Windows NT and Windows 95 are designed to display Unicode characters. Unfortunately, many of the screen and printer drivers supplied with the Windows 95 operating system are not capable of displaying characters with Unicode numbers greater than 255.

To circumvent the problems with some of the Windows 95 screen and printer drivers, the Universal font was split into four separate fonts, each of whose characters are in the range 32–255. These fonts are also installed when Scientific Notebook is installed. The division of the Universal font into four fonts is necessarily arbitrary, so the term `custom font' is used to denote the collection of four fonts.

When Scientific Notebook is installed, the settings in the Font Mapping dialog box are set to the most conservative values. With these settings, some of the extended Latin characters may not display or print correctly on your system. Provided your computer has correctly functioning screen and printer drivers, you can fix these problems by installing Microsoft's multilingual support and then choosing different settings in the Font Mapping dialog box.
