Basic Operations

The result of applying Evaluate to a combination of integers and fractions will be a fraction. However, If any of the components of a combination of numbers is written in floating point form, that is, with a decimal, the result will be in decimal notation. Symbolic real numbers such as $\sqrt{{2}}$ and π will retain symbolic form unless evaluated numerically.

$\blacktriangleright$ With the insertion point in a sum, difference, product, or quotient choose Evaluate

9.6π -2.7π = 6. 9π

34 + 162 - ${\dfrac{{25}}{{4}}}$ + ${\dfrac{{13}}{{7}}}$ -29÷6.97 = 187. 45

$\blacktriangleright$ With the insertion point in a sum, difference, product, or quotient choose Evaluate Numerically

235.3 + 813 6pt = 1048. 3

42$\left(\vphantom{ \dfrac{2}{3}+\dfrac{1}{7}}\right.$${\dfrac{{2}}{{3}}}$ + ${\dfrac{{1}}{{7}}}$$\left.\vphantom{ \dfrac{2}{3}+\dfrac{1}{7}}\right)$$\sqrt{{2}}$ 6pt = 48. 083

9.6π -2.7π 6pt = 21. 677

34 + 162 - ${\dfrac{{25}}{{4}}}$ + ${\dfrac{{13}}{{7}}}$ -29÷6.97 = 187. 45

You can control the number of decimal places returned by Evaluate Numerically in the Maple SettingsMaple settings dialog.
