This entire project grew out of the farsighted vision of Roger Hunter, who insisted that there had to be an easier way and actually found one. And who then kept searching, finding ever better ones. This manuscript grew out of an early version of FileDirlivedemo.tex, a demonstration document by Roger Hunter, Fred Richman, John Thomas, and Elbert Walker provided as a part of the Scientific WorkPlace systems. The authors sincerely appreciate this head start. We owe special thanks to John Thomas for developing many of the features of Scientific WorkPlace and Scientific Notebook to fit the documentation; to John MacKendrick, Jennifer Higbie, Cheryl Sutter, and Jeannie Boomer, who tested the documentation; to Elbert Walker for his extensive help and suggestions; and to David Walker for his expert advice on the first revision.
We wish to thank the staff at Brooks/Cole Publishing Company for their encouragement and advice, including in particular Bob Evans, Bill Roberts, Marlene Thom, and Elizabeth Barelli Rammel. We also wish to thank the following reviewers of the first version of this document, who responded on very short notice and provided many useful comments: Maurino Bautista, Rochester Institute of Technology; Robert Busby, Drexel University; Robert Eisenberg, Rush Medical College; John Gosselin, University of Georgia; Roger Horn, University of Utah; Aaron Meyerowitz, Florida Atlantic University; Heinrich Niederhausen, Florida Atlantic University; Barbara Osofsky, Rutgers University; Mike Pepe, Seattle Central Community College; and Fred Richman, Florida Atlantic University. We owe thanks to Jeremy Hayhurst who encouraged us to write together. Finally, we would like to thank Linda Hardy for her support and encouragement.
