The program distinguishes between mathematics and text when information is
entered and stored. The Math/Text button tells you whether the information
you enter at the insertion pointGlossary.tex#insertion point
will be interpreted as mathematics or text:

itbpF22.4375pt21.0625pt2ptmath.wmfmathematics
When the insertion point is in text, the program:
- Interprets anything you type as text.
- Displays characters upright.
- Uses the space bar to insert a single space between words and
sentences.
When the insertion point is in mathematics, the program:
- Interprets anything you type as mathematics.
- Italicizes alphabetic characters.
- Recognizes math names and displays them according to the mathematics
defaults.
- Displays numbers upright.
- Formats mathematics according to internationally recognized standards.
- Automatically inserts space around operators such as + and relations
such as =.
- Uses the spacebar to advance the insertion point to the next object,
not to insert spaces.
