Customize Scientific Notebook

You can customize Scientific Notebook to suit the way you work. By displaying, hiding, and moving toolbars, screen elements, and open documents and by changing the magnification used to display documents, you can make Scientific Notebook even more convenient to use.


$\blacktriangleright$    To display or hide toolbars

  1. From the View menu, choose Toolbars.

  2. Check the toolbars you want to display and uncheck the toolbars you want to hide.

  3. Choose OK.


$\blacktriangleright$    To move a toolbar to a new location

  1. Display the toolbar.

  2. Place the mouse pointer anywhere in the gray area surrounding the buttons.

  3. Drag the toolbar to a new location. You can dock the toolbar on the top, bottom, or sides of the program window, or you can float it in the entry area or on your desktop.


$\blacktriangleright$    To display or hide a symbol panel

  1. Click the Symbol toolbar button for the panel you want to display.

  2. Place the mouse pointer anywhere in the gray area surrounding the buttons.

  3. Drag the panel to a new location.

  4. When you're ready to hide the panel, clickitbpF16.6875pt14.5pt2ptclose.wmfon the panel or click the corresponding Symbol toolbar button.

  1. From the View menu, choose Custom.

  2. Set the magnification to a value between 50 and 400 percent of the working view.

Working in Scientific Notebook is fast, but you can make it even faster if you use the function keys to apply the tags you use most often. You can set global function key assignments, or you can override the global settings with different function key assignments for each style.

$\blacktriangleright$    To set function key assignments

  1. From the Tag menu, choose Function Keys.

  2. Select the tag whose function key assignment you want to change.

  3. In the Save With box

  4. The Current Assignment box shows any function keys assigned to the tag. You can cancel the current assignments or add to them.

  5. Place the insertion point in the Press New Keys area and press the function key you want to assign to the selected tag.

  6. Choose Assign.

  7. Repeat steps 2–6 for all tags to which you want to assign a function key.

  8. Choose Close.


By changing the User Setup defaults, you can customize the way Scientific Notebook works. You can set these defaults:


These defaults Relate to
General how the program operates internally
Edit how certain keyboard keys and the mouse function as you enter material
Start-up Document which document shell is displayed when you open the program
Graphics how you want the program to treat new graphics
Math how the Math/Text toggle and other mathematics controls operate
Files where standard files are located and how and when you want
      your files to be saved
Font Mapping how you control which fonts the program uses for special characters

  1. From the Tool menu, choose User Setup.

  2. Choose the tab you want

  3. Set the defaults as you want them.

  4. Choose OK.
