Character Support

Scientific Notebook uses a number of different methods to display characters. We have gone through considerable effort to display as many of the standard mathematical symbols and characters as possible without having to install additional fonts, drivers, or other software. For most users, this will be more than sufficient.

To display the full range of characters, however, Scientific Notebook uses a combination of Unicode characters and proprietary fonts, to provide the largest possible character set. For this to work correctly, you must add Multilanguage support and set the font mapping option to ``Use Universal Fonts.''

To set the font mapping option to ``Use Universal Fonts, follow these steps:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose User Setup.

  2. Click the Font Mapping tab.

  3. Make sure the ``Use Universal Font'' checkbox has been checked.

  4. Choose OK.

All of the characters that Scientific Notebook had been displaying as question marks will now appear as characters. This change will not, however, allow Scientific Notebook to display all of the characters it is capable of displaying. To see Cyrillic, or the European Latin and Extended Latin characters found in Sample_Article.tex, you must install Multilanguage support from your Windows 95 CD-ROM, according to these instructions:

  1. On the Windows desktop, click the Start button on the Taskbar.

  2. When the menu appears, choose Settings, Control Panel.

  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  4. Choose the Windows Setup tab.

  5. If Multilanguage Support is one of the available choices, skip to step 6. If you do not have a choice for Multilanguage Support, you must obtain an installable version of this support from Microsoft:

    1. Use your web browser to open http://www.microsoft.com/windows/software.htmhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/software.htm

    2. Choose the link to CD-ROM Extras, then choose Multilanguage Support. Follow the instructions on this web page to install the Multilanguage Support. Once this is done, skip to step 8.

  6. Check the box for Multilanguage Support, then choose OK.

  7. Insert your Windows 95 CD and follow the instructions on the screen.

  8. When the installation is complete, restart Windows.
