Hackers Can't Make Fake Metrocard 8/11/97 Seems the Transit Authority can pat itself on the back for making hack-free Metrocards. Computer hackers say so far they haven't been able to make phony Metrocards that work with any regularity. And hackers say they believe the Transit Authority has only lost $5,000 dollars to fraudulent cards...compared with millions of dollars lost to counterfeit tokens each year. Hackers say the way the TA's computers track the cards' serial numbers is virtually impossible to crack, and even a well-programmed bogus card will only work once. Copyright 1997, New York 1 News
