MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

To use Internet Phone, you will need:

Pentium Processor 75 MHz
16 MB RAM
Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0
32-bit Winsock Internet TCP/IP connection
(minimum connection speed 14,400bps SLIP or PPP; 28.8bps recommended)
Windows-compatible sound card*
Microphone and speakers
Windows-compatible video capture device to transmit video
(not needed to receive video)
  * A full-duplex sound card is needed for full-duplex mode.
Notes:
A 32-bit Winsock comes with Windows 95. You may be able to use a 16-bit winsock by downloading and installing a winsock utility from http://users.aol.com/friedv/wsock32.htm
The Community Browser displays information your computer receives from the Internet, just like a Web browser. If you have Microsoft's Internet Explorer installed on your system, you will be able to view content that contains animation, plug-ins and Java applets. If you do not have Internet Explorer installed, the Community Browser will display its content using an internal browser, which means that you will not be able to view all types of content properly.

We therefore recommend that you install Microsoft Internet Explorer on your system.

Note that if you use another type of Web broswer, such as Netscape Navigator, you can install Internet Explorer on your system and still use the other browser to browse the Internet.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Setting up the Audio

When you install Internet Phone, the Audio Test window appears. Use it to test your audio configuration and to make sure your microphone and sound card are set up correctly.

To perform the audio test

  1. Click the Start Test button which will give the message Active.
When you speak into your microphone the message changes to Recording.
  2. Stop speaking after a few seconds (do not stop test). The message change to Playing and your voice plays back automatically.
  3. You should hear your voice through your speakers during playback.
If you hear your voice while recording or do not hear your voice through the speakers when the message says 'Playing' go to step 5.
You can adjust the playback level by dragging the Playback slider to the desired volume.
  4. Once you have done this and have set it to the desired level click Stop Test and close window.
  5. Click Audio Mixer and then select Option/Properties/Recording and make sure Microphone is checked. Click OK and make sure that the Microphone Volume slider is set 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up. Select Advanced Controls from the Options menu and then click the Advanced button (under the Microphone Volume slider).

If you do not have this Advanced button option or is grayed out please contact your sound card manufacture for instructions on how to turn off Monitoring/Karaoke.
  6. At the bottom of the screen of the Advance Controls for Microphone screen select 1 Microphone Boost (AGC or Microphone Gain Control) and clear Karaoke Mode (Mic Monitor). If there is no 'Karaoke Mode' close the window and get back to Options/Properties/Playback, select Microphone and make sure Mute is selected for the Microphone. If it says Select and not Mute clear the box.
TIP You can change your audio settings any time or re-test from within Internet Phone by choosing Audio in the Options menu and clicking Test.

How to configure Internet Phone for a minimal use of your system resources

you should change a few settings. Some of the changes can be applied using the Internet Phone Preferences that can be accessed from the Options menu. Please do one or more of the following:

  • Work in no animation mode. From the Options menu, choose Preferences. Select None from the Animated Assistant box in the Display tab.
  • Use Internal Browser. This might increase your system performance but you will not be able to view content such as animation, plug-ins and Java applets in the Community Browser. From the Options menu, choose Preferences. Select the Community Browser icon and click Web Content tab. Select Internal Browser.
  • Choose not to view a chat room content. In the Community Browser window choose Chat Room>View and clear the View Content option.
  • Avoid changing the default selection of the following parameters: no use of H.323, use automatic codec selection, do not open Community Browser on startup.
  • Choose not to send or receive video on session startup. From the Options menu, choose Preferences. Click the Sessions tab. Clear Auto Receive Video and Send Video on Session Startup. When you would like to send or receive video just click on the video icons in the Internet Phone window.
