*********************************************************** Delphi Installation Notes *********************************************************** We recommend that you read the entire contents of this file prior to installing Delphi. Certain portions of this file pertain only to some editions (Standard, Professional, Client/server, Enterprise) of Delphi 4. Wherever possible, when a topic concerns only specific editions this is also noted within the topic. TABLE OF CONTENTS =========================================================== 1. BEFORE INSTALLING =========================================================== IMPORTANT: ********************************************************* Before installing, if you have a previous version of Delphi and wish to install Delphi in that same directory, you must uninstall the previous version. You should also back up your existing IDAPI.CFG file before installation. If you have installed any previous release of the MS Internet Control Pack, uninstall that version before installing Delphi. ********************************************************* Delphi 4 works when installed on a computer on which the last release of Delphi 3 has already been installed (although it is not necessary to have Delphi 3 installed before installing Delphi 4). To be safe, back up important data, including projects that you intend to share between Delphi 3 and Delphi 4, before installing Delphi 4. 2. INSTALLING Delphi =========================================================== 2.1 Starting the installation program ------------------------------------- Install Delphi from the Setup Launcher on the Delphi CD-ROM. Under Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, the Setup Launcher starts automatically when you insert the CD in your CD drive. From the Setup Launcher, you can install Delphi, Install- Shield Express, and other programs (which vary depending on the edition you have). You can also connect directly to INPRISE Online to register your copy of Delphi (requires a working Internet connection). *********************************************************** IMPORTANT! Be sure to reboot the computer (as prompted by the installation program) after installing and before using Delphi 4. *********************************************************** 2.2 Installing from a network or shared drive --------------------------------------------- If installing from a network or shared drive, you must map a drive letter to the drive such that the root of this mapped drive contains INSTALL.EXE. 2.3 Installation directory -------------------------- By default, Delphi installs into the directory: \Program Files\Borland\Delphi 4 If you install to a different location, make sure you do not install over any previous Delphi release. The README.TXT file and all other documentation assume that you have used the default directory structure. 2.4 Installing the Borland Database Engine ------------------------------------------ This release of Delphi includes a new version of the Borland Database Engine (BDE). Unless you specify other than the default setup directories during installation, Delphi will overwrite existing 32-bit BDE and SQL Links installations. (SQL Links is only available in the Client/ server and Enterprise editions.) 2.5 InterBase Installation -------------------------- Delphi 4 includes the latest release (version 5.1.1) of Local InterBase. InterBase must be installed separately from Delphi (a separate icon appears in the launcher program). 2.6 Other Installation Considerations ------------------------------------- If you are installing Delphi and SQL Links for use with Sybase version 4.2 or lower, select DB-Lib when prompted by the installation utility. CT-Lib is recommended for use with System 10 and higher. 2.7 Installation Conflicts -------------------------- To avoid potential conflicts when system files are installed or modified, we recommend you close all other running applications before installing Delphi 4. To se a list of currently running programs: look at the Task Bar or press Ctrl-Alt-Del (once, only!) and running programs are listed in the Close Program dialog. 3. AFTER INSTALLING =========================================================== After installing, reboot your system so it can replace any files that may have been locked during installation. ********************************************************* Please review README.TXT once installation is complete. Before distributing Delphi applications, please review your license agreement and DEPLOY.TXT (on the Delphi CD or in the Delphi directory). ********************************************************* 4. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS =========================================================== 4.1 Delphi 4 Requirements ------------------------- * Intel 486/66 MHz or higher. * Microsoft Windows 95 or NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3). * Memory 16Mb of RAM (32Md or higher recommended). * 60Mb hard disk space (Compact install). * CD-ROM drive. * VGA or higher resolution monitor. * Mouse or other pointing device. * Networks supported: Any Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT or higher compatible network. 4.2 Delphi 4 Installation Size ------------------------------ The table below shows the amount of hard disk space req- uired for an installation of Delphi and the BDE. These fig- ures include approximately 10 Mbytes of disk space that are used only during installation. Version Full Compact -------------- ----- ------- Standard 120Mb 40Mb Professional 160Mb 48Mb Client/Server 190Mb 60Mb 5. CUSTOM INSTALLATION =========================================================== To conserve disk space, you can perform a custom inst- allation, selecting only the options you require. To do so, select the Custom radiobutton in the Setup Type dialog during the installation set-up. Disk space required for the total custom installation and individual options is dis- played as options are selected and unselected. One of the options of a Custom install is to install Registry keys only. This option can be used to repair keys damaged as a result of a computer crash or to set up sets of Registry keys for different user profiles. During a Custom install using Registry keys only, you may select to install minimal files. These are files in the Windows system directory, and the files are installed and Registry keys defined. 6. UNINSTALLING Delphi =========================================================== To remove Delphi from your computer: Open the Control Panel folder, and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select Delphi from the list dis- played, then click the Add/Remove button. Follow the inst- ructions that appear on the screen. 7. INTERBASE =========================================================== 7.1 Certificate Key and Certificate ID -------------------------------------- For the Certificate Key and Certificate ID needed to install InterBase, see the file (on the Delphi 4 CD): \IB5\IBKEY.TXT 7.2 Other InterBase files ------------------------- The following files are not installable from the Delphi launcher. You must install them separately using the installation executables listed below: Adobe \IB5\ADOBE\SETUP.EXE W32CLNT \IB5\W32CLNT\SETUP.EXE 7.3 Installing InterBase separately ----------------------------------- To install InterBase separately, not using the Delphi 4 launcher, use the InterBase installation executable on the Delphi CD: \IB5\IBASE50\SETUP.EXE 8. KNOWN INSTALLATION PROBLEMS =========================================================== 8.1 Delphi and InterBase Client ------------------------------- When installing Delphi and InterBase client, an invalid error message may occur. With an error code of 401, the message is "String variable is not large enough for string. Check the string declarations". Ignore the error and click the OK button, the installation will proceed normally. When this problem does occur, it should only be on installations involving very long directory paths. 8.2 InterBase Install/Registry ------------------------------ If the error "Internal error near: IBcheck" occurs, check the PATH value for the registry key: HK_Current_user\environment and if it is a hex value delete it or convert it to a character string. 8.3 InterBase 5 and NetWizard ----------------------------- NetWizard may interfere with the installation of InterBase 5 (not included with all editions of Delphi), resulting in the error "Error trying to interface with Windows shell." You must disable NetWizard prior to installing Delphi 4. 8.4 Japanese Windows 95 ----------------------- When installing on a Japanese Windows 95 machine, if you incur error messages concerning self-registering files failing to register you should complete the installation and then manually register the files (TREGSRVR.EXE). 8.5 InstallShield and Microsoft Outlook 98 ------------------------------------------ Having Outlook 98 running when installing Delphi 4 will cause InstallShield to hang. We strongly recommend that you close this and all other Windows programs when installing Delphi 4. =========================================================== Unless otherwise noted, all materials provided in this release are Copyright 1983 - 1998 by INPRISE Corporation. ========================= END =============================
