› o=o=o=o=o=›› Re: Newsletter Disks›› I seldom get messages that a› newsletter disk doesn't work. When I› do get such a message, it's usually› the result of something the US Postal› Service did. Disks get mangled in› the mail sometimes. RON FETZER has a› cure for this. If a disk is creased,› Ron suggests that you take the› magnetic disk out of its black› enclosure (carefully, so the› enclosure can be re-used) and place› it between two sheets of glass. You› then put the assembly in the sun for› a couple of hours. The crease should› come out. Take the disk and put it› back in its black enclosure, seal the› enclosure with tape, and try to run› the disk. Many creased disks have› been rescued this way. Of course,› you should hold the disk only by its› edges and not put fingerprints on the› magnetic surface, since that can also› make a disk unreadable.›› Of course, if you receive a› newsletter disk that cannot be read,› please let me know about it, and I'll› replace it. My snail-mail address› appears on the title screen of the› newsletter, so you'll need an older› issue to get it. My e-mail addresses› are also listed and have been for the› last several issues.›› But recently, I heard of another kind› of problem; one that can occur during› the copying process. Both President› JACK GEDALIUS and local member HARRY› TUTHILL had newsletter disks (The› January/February 1999 issue) that› booted properly, but flashed while› loading text. In both cases too, the› bottom line (the one that instructs› you to use a key or joystick button› to go to the next page) was replaced› by odd characters in an entirely› different color. I know that such a› problem can be difficult to trace.›› Only two of us, Ron and myself,› currently duplicate the newsletter› disks. Therefore, starting with this› issue, I am going to put a metallic› purple "dot" in the lower right-hand› corner of Side 1 of every copy I› make. If your disk boots, but then› doesn't respond normally, please let› me know if the "dot" is present or› not. That way, we can trace copying› errors to either my equipment or› Ron's and correct the problem.›› Ron and I thank you very much.›› Alan Sharkis› Editor›› o=o=o=o=o=›››
