NY›› DEMO OF DESKTOP PUBLISHING!›› To run the DEMO you must have an›EPSON or COMPATIBLE printer and a "1st›XLEnt" word processor. Load the file›"DESKTOP.EPS" into your word processor›and print it. USE ONLY DRIVE #1. After›each picture is printed you will›receive a prompt on the screen to turn›the paper back to the top of the›picture. When you have done that press›the space bar to continue printing.›HAPPY DESK TOP PUBLISHING! NOTE that›you must have the other 3 programs to›run demo: DESKTOP.EPS-RON1.DSK-TRECK1.›DSK. All 3 files are on side 2. DEMO›DOCUMENTATION follows and can be used›by you with modifications!›› ********›› Have you ever yearned for a›program that could put pictures into›your word processing text? Is there a›program that lets you wrap text around›a picture? Are you dismayed that only›the "EXPENSIVE" computers can do such›printing? Take heart! Your lowly 8-Bit›Atari computer can do all these›things› If you own a 1st XLEnt Word›Processor vesion 2.1 you can do these›things easily. The 1st XLEnt word›processor is the perfect vehicle for›desk top publishing. It has a very›sophisticated PICTURE FORMATTER and›many great features as a word›processor. The PICTURE FORMATTER works›with EPSON and COMPATIBLES as well as›the ATARI XMM801 printers. This word›processor rivals for ease of use and›features WORD PERFECT and many others›costing hundreds of dollars. If you›want to buy this word processor you›can get it from AMERICAN TECHNA-›VISION, 15338 Inverness St., San›Leandro, CA 94579. Tel 1-800-551-9995.›The price is $25.00 plus $4.75 for›shipping. In my opinion it is worth›the price.› To load the PICTURE FORMATTER›into your computer press any key while›the word processor is loading. The›PICTURE FORMATTER can print 2›different types of pictures. They are›COMPRESSED and NORMAL. In each of›these two categories you can get 4›different size pitures They are›NORMAL SIZE, 2 X HEIGHT, 2 X WIDTH›and 2 X HEIGHT & WIDTH. Thus you have›a choice of 8 different size pictures.›In addition you also can crop›pictures. It is very strongly›suggested you take a sample 62 sector›MICRO PAINTER picture and print out›all 8 sizes as a standard. You will›need to know how much space each size›occupies in your document.› The PICTURE FORMATTER works only›with 62 sector MICRO PAINTER pictures.›After the picture is loaded you can›add text to the picture with any kind›of font. We will use a compressed›format for this article. The 1st›prompt to SAVE will save it as a›standard 62 sector picture. This IS›NOT the picture that will be used in›your document. When the 2ND prompt›comes "DO YOU WANT TO PRINT IT?"›please answer "D" to save it to disk.›Your word processor must know the way›you have formatted it in order to use›it. The word processor will not pick›up a standard 62 sector picture, it›must have been saved to disk with this›option. Since the left margin of the›text on your word processor is 10›please type in the same number when›the prompt from the PICTURE FORMATTER›asks you for the left margin of the›picture. Printing of the picture can›be done in NORMAL or INVERSE. In›NORMAL you get a normal printout. In›INVERSE you get a negative printout.›Select NORMAL. Once you have saved the›picture this way you can use it in a›document.› Most of the time you will use the›COMPRESSED NORMAL size in your›document. A compressed picture is 27›letters or characters across and 17›text lines high. This information is›need when you write your document.› Start writing your document.›Wherever you want the picture to be›put into the text write the command›OPTION+F'ep:D1:PICTURE.NAM' and below›it write the command OPTION+F'ps:TURN›PAPER BACK TO TOP OF PICTURE'. I am›assuming you do not have a printer›driver with a REVERSE LINE FEED CODE›on your word processor. When the›picture is finished printing a prompt›will come on the screen to turn the›paper back to the top of the picture.›Since the picture takes 27 letters on›the left side of your document and the›left margin is 10 you NOW MAKE the›LEFT MARGIN for your text 38. Now you›will be able to write NEXT to the›picture for 17 text lines the›continuation of your document.›REMEMBER your picture is only 17 text›lines high, therefore you need this›left margin of 38 for only 17 text›lines. Go to the preview section on›your word processor and check out the›number of lines. After the 17 text›lines change the LEFT MARGIN of your›word processor back to 10 by giving›the command OPTION+F'lm10'. Now you›can continue writing in a normal›fashion. A 2 X HEIGHT picture will›occupy 32 text lines.› If you decide to print your›picture in the middle of your text›with no text next to the picture you›have to add one more command to the›text. The word processor does not›count the lines when it is printing a›picture therefore you must add the›command OPTION+F'cl+16' to increase›the line count by 16 so the page›breaks will be correct. These are then›the commands that should appear on›your word processor document:›OPTION+F'ep:D1:PICTURE.NAM' below it›should be OPTION+F'ps:TURN PAPER BACK›TO TOP OF PICTURE' and if you have no›text next to the picture you must have›the command OPTION+F'cl+16'› If your word processor printer›driver has a REVERSE LINE FEED CODE of›OPTION+Z then the 2nd command of›OPTION+F'ps:TURN PAPER BACK TO TOP OF›PICTURE' will be replaced with 17›OPTION+Z's. Now the whole process is›automatic and you just watch your›printer do its thing.› I have 2 printers an EPSON FX-80›and an ATARI XMM801. I can do double›column printing with the XMM801 but I›cannot do it with the EPSON. In double›column printing you make your TEXT›COLUMNS as follows: 1st COLUMN. Left›margin = 2; Right margin = 38. 2ND›COLUMN. Left margin 42, Right margin›78.› When you format your PICTURES for›2 column printing. The picture for the›first column should have a left margin›of 7. The picture for the 2nd column›should have a left margin of 47. Both›pictures must be in the COMPRESSED›style in order to fit into the›columns. After each picture printing›command you must also increase the›line count. Please add the command›OPTION+F'cl+16' after each picture so›the page breaks will be correct.›Sometimes in 2 column printing the›printer goes into 1/8 line spacing to›prevent that I use the command›OPTION+F'sb27' and OPTION+F'sb54'.›This is the code for 6 lines per inch›for the XMM801 printer. I place that›below the picture printing command.› Now you can include pictures in›your document to make a presentation›more interesting. You can even›illustrate your articles by using a›drawing program and saving or›converting your graphics image to 62›sectors to be used with the PICTURE›FORMATTER. Your 8-Bit ATARI computer›can now do all the things the "MORE›EXPENSIVE" computers do.››>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>END<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<›
