*+*+*+*+*› MINUTES JUNE 1992 MEETING› =========================››NEW MEMBER:›› Slowly but surely the clubs›membership increases. This time, we›welcome MURRAY BERKOWITZ who joined›the OL' HACKERS ATARI CLUB. MURRAY›lives in OLD BETHPAGE, L.I., a stones›throw from th Library. MURRAY has›worked on ATARI 8-Bit computers for›some time, and has always wanted to›join an all 8 BIT club. OL' HACKERS›was a dream come true. Welcome to the›club.››GRAPHIC CONTEST:›› As promised the GRAPHICS contest›was held at ths meeting. The judges›for the GRAPHIC CONTEST were JOE›LEBER, BOB ULSCHMID and ALLAN ATKINS.›After careful and deliberte›consideration the winners were›announced as follows:›› 1st Prize - ALEX PIGNATO with›"MISS OHAUG 1992"›› 2nd & 3d Prize's - JACK GEDALIUS›with his 2 color prints. One was a›picture with a LOVE theme, and the›other was a Scanned picture of his›daughter made with a digitizer›› The new CURRENT NOTES magazine›had a very lengthy letter by BEN›POEHLAND our member from Pennsylvania.›In it he tells us about the deep›feelings he had about the disaster of›the CHALLENGER five years ago and how›it affected him personally. He sat›down and wrote a beautiful poem which›was published in the JUNE 1992 issue›of CURRENT NOTES. ALEX said the poem›is very moving and very well done.›ALEX read part of the poem at the›meeting. JOE LEBER said his brother is›an Aero-Space Engineer and he was very›much involved in that launch and he›can attest to the fact that the›disaster had a profound affect on›everyone, including JOE's brother.› ALEX felt he just had to write a›letter to BEN in which he stated that›BEN had a great talent with words and›perhaps that BEN had missed his›calling as an author. ALEX said that›he enjoyed the poem tremendously and›we were glad that BEN was a friend and›a member of the OL' HACKERS. ALEX›mentioned that RON FETZER used BEN'S›article to upgrade the two of his Hong›Kong 800XL computers, as well as›ALEX'S. (BEN: the articles are great,›and the upgrades work beautifully -› RON). ALEX praised RON for his›dedication to the 8-Bit and to the OL'›HACKERS in the lettter to BEN. ALEX›mentioned that the write-in campaign›for the CLASSIC MAGAZINE was a›success. AIM magazine got 560›commitments to subscribe to an 8-Bit›CLASSIC MAGAZINE. The CLASSIC 8-Bit›magazine campaign report can be read›on GENIE file #5854 or COMP-U-SERVE›#18446.››The WESTERN NEW YORK ATARI USERS GROUP›is also using our newsletter format›for their newsletter. ››COMMITTEE REPORTS:›› HAROLD PEGLER the librarian›reported on our experimental DISKO›PARTY copy program. The program is›going O.K. but more members should›avail themselves of these great disk›bargains, before the program›finishes.›› TREASURES REPORT: The treasurer›RON FETZER reported that we are O.K.›and in the black.››CORRESPONDENCE:›› RICK REASER the current 8-Bit›editor of CURRENT NOTES wrote and said›that in future issues he probably will›review the RON FETZER, OL' HACKERS›"TURBO BASIC PROGRAMMING KIT" and the›RON FETZER, STAN SCHENFELD "DISK›MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" disks. RICK also›wrote to ALEX that he might highlight›our club in his section of the›magazine. ALEX answered him and told›him more about our club. ALEX›mentioned KRIS HOLTEGAARD, (one of our›programmers) a deceased member who›wrote the program for our newsletter -› an excellent programmer and a fine›member. We shall miss him.›› The SAGE SCROLL from ERIE,›Pennsylvania mentioned the OL' HACKERS›and they thanked us for helping them›with their newsletter.›› AL ATKINS wrote up the complete›procedures and protocols for going on›to the NEW NEST BBS (516) 234-4943 and›how to use the 850 EXPRESS MODEM›PROGRAM. He made copies of his article›and distributed it to the members. It›was very well done and the members›appreciated his work. Because AL is so›unassuming when he photo copied it he›did not even put his name on it. AL it›is a great piece of work and it has›helped all of us to become more adept›when going on a modem, and it will be›found in this next newsletter.›› A letter from JIM CUTLER our›member from ENGLAND. He writes us that›he is going on a vacation to North›Wales for a week. He sends us his›regards, and a couple of disks as›always. Thanks again, JIM. ENJOY YOUR›VACATION!›› From the LIBRARY's "WORLD OF›PLAINVIEW" newsletter of Jan 1987 ALEX›showed a picture of ALEX and AL ATKINS›and some of the other members not with›us any more. We had presented the›Library at that time with Atari›programs for children and adults.››DEMOE's:›› ALEX showed the program HEAVY›METAL which comes from the AIM disk of›the month. It is a very good example›of the great graphics that come from›EUROPE.›› ALEX showed a modification he had›made to the "BULK FORMATTER" PROGRAM›by RON FETZER. ALEX added a directory›function and more caution functions to›the program. In the mean time›unbeknownst to ALEX, RON had re-›written the program and called it›"SUPER BULK FORMATTER." It will be put›into our P.D. Library.›› A program from AIM magazine›called DRONE was shown, It is a great›game. It is a take off on PAC MAN but›but it is much better and the graphics›are great. It is in machine language›and very fast!›› ALEX showed a game program called›"CASINO" that had about 5 games on it.›The computer picks which game you are›to play. From Craps to Russian›Roulette. ALEX played craps and lost›his shirt. Better never go to Los›Vegas ALEX! A couple members played›RUSSIAN ROULETTE, and lived to tell›about it.›› ALEX showed another disk from AIM›magazine, "EURODEMO 2" made by THE›GATE KEEPER from Holland a great demo.›again it proves that they do›unbelievable graphics work in Europe.›› RON FETZER showed his new SUPER›BULK FORMATTER for 2 disk drives. The›program requires SUPERDOS because this›DOS issues error codes on XIO format›commands - DOS 2.5 does not. RON›showed how the program can format 2 or›an unlimited amount of disks at one›time. The program can write any›density and can format 1 or 2 sides of›a disk. If you want too, you can also›write DOS.SYS to the disk at the same›time. If the program encounters a bad›side it stops and lets you label the›bad side and then it continues. I›always have 5 disks formatted. I use›single density and 1050 density.›Frequently you need a formatted disk›or you loose the program, such as on a›download or when writing a program.›This program will be put on a future›newsletter disk for you to have. (Look›in this newsletter!)›› ALEX showed a utility disk that›he made up of KRIS HOLTEGAARD's›programs. We saw a SCREEN FONT LOADER›program, a super directory program,›copy a file, and DOS function menu›programs, write, edit or create or›view a text file, reboot computer,›show current time and date on disk,›utilities etc. It is a terrific›program. It has so many features on it›that it required a double density›disk. ALEX said that he is going to›make it up as 2 single density disks›because many 8-Bitters do not have›double density drives. You have a lot›of programs on the disk to do various›things. On the utility section you›have such things as MULTI.COM,›JOYSTICK TESTER, PRINTER SETUP etc.›ALEX is still working on this program,›and hopes to put it into the Library›soon.››PICNIC NEWS:›› STAN SCHENFELD, V.P. and the›picnic chairman reported that BRADY›PARK has been booked for the whole›year. He suggested that instead we›have a PICNIC DINNER. Since we had›such a good time last time at CAFE 20›in Baldwin L.I. the members agreed to›have a dinner instead. ALEX made›arrangements for FRIDAY evening at 7›PM. The date is July 17. By the time›you read this the dinner date will›have passed.›› HAROLD PEGLER then demonstrated›some digitized pictures. The pictures›looked like they were digitized with›EASY SCAN. The pictures were pretty›impressive.›› HARRY TUTHILL demonstrated two›programs that he uses together to›manage his finances. The programs are›FAMILY FINANCE and MICRO CHECK. HARRY›uses the same codes in FAMILY FINANCE›and MICRO CHECK so he can use both›programs.› HARRY said that FAMILY FINANCE an›Atari program is very user friendly.›You just follow the prompts. MICRO›CHECK has a much better search ability›than FAMILY FINANCE. You can call up›any expense or income groups by its›code for the year or quarter year or›month. FAMILY FINANCE uses 2 sides of›a disk. One side is cash flow on the›other side is budgets. With MICRO›CHECK HARRY uses 2 disks. One is the›system disk and disk two is the data›disk. On the data disks, one side is›for expenses and the other side is for›income. With MICRO CHECK you have an›unlimited printout with codes whereas›FAMILY FINANCE has only 13 codes of›incomes and 13 codes of expenses.› HARRY modified MICRO CHECK to›suit his needs. MICRO CHECK is in›BASIC. Since the program is primarily›a check balancing program HARRY›modified it for a finance program.›HARRY created a semi monthly worksheet›for incomes and expenses. On the work›sheet he enters the codes and then he›enters it into MICRO CHECK at the›middle and the end of the month. With›MICRO CHECK you can call up any›expense or income for any period of›time that you are interested in. HARRY›showed us some actual entries that he›made with the programs and then he›searched for them. He prints out a›budget with FAMILY FINANCE.› The presentation was very›detailed and complete and very›interesting. This was the first demo›by HARRY and it was well done, and we›hope to see more of HARRY's, demo's.›Harry got a standing ovation from the›club for the great presentation.››DOOR PRIZES:››RON FETZER›HAROLD PEGLER›ALLAN ATKINS›JACK GEDALIUS›MURRY BERKOWITZ›ALAN SHARKIS›BOB ULSCHMID›STAN SCHENFELD›JOE LEBER› (No, HARRY TUTHILL did not win›this time, Sorry HARRY!!)››Submitted by› Ron Fetzer›› >>>>>>>>>>>>>>END<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<›
