One hundred years ago, Emperor Peter I, now known throughout the world as "The Great," ascended the throne of Russia. One of the greatest of the Emperor’s many spectacular achievements was the establishment of the magnificent city of St. Petersburg, which has served as the capital of Russia for nearly 70 years.

As part of the centennial celebration of Emperor Peter's ascension to the throne, the St. Petersburg Tourist Office takes a look at the life of this remarkable ruler, and the astounding changes he brought to Russia. We also look back on the development of St. Petersburg, which has grown from a remote outpost in northwestern Russia in a desolate marshland into one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
