4th Sept’r, 1781

Up at 6 o’clock yesterday to march for half an hour to the James River. We saw the glorious sight of French boats, which, I’m told, arrived two days before. We counted more than 30 of them, among them 4 frigates, one with 110 guns, they are saying, and we sent up a cheer seeing them. Today, the French boats took us across. Tarried a bit, long enough for the rain to begin, marched half a mile to Green Springs.

Spent a night in the pouring rain, for our tents and other supplies were left on the other side of the river and were supposed to catch up with us later. This morning started at 4, marched 7 miles, encamped at the college in Williamsburg. Here, we met up with the troops of the Marquis. Still without baggage or supplies.
