The
recent revival of learning in Europe has created a huge demand for books.
Copyists and block printers have not kept pace with the demand. The first
practical use of movable type, developed by Johannes Gutenberg of Germany,
and the ensuing spread of print shops using his method show signs of solving
the book shortage. This kind of type allows for the rapid production of
multiple copies.
