Christian
armies of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella marched on the Muslim
kingdom of Granada and overthrew its Moorish rulers in 1492. Granada had
been under Muslim control since the 700's. Even as other Moorish areas
in Spain were lost to the advancing Christians, Granada remained a center
of Muslim learning and civilization.
