PUBLIC NOTICE

New Regulations of Outrageous and Excessive Apparel

It has come to our notice that many people of the kingdom are wearing apparel inappropriate to their station. That is, laborers are dressing in the apparel of craftsmen; craftsmen, the apparel of valets; valets, the apparel of squires; and squires, the apparel of knights. Poor women are dressing as ladies, and poor clerks are wearing fur suitable only for the king. All this has caused these items to increase in price, and the wealth of the kingdom is being consumed and destroyed.

We decree that the following groups shall abide by certain rules of apparel:

All manufacturers and sellers of cloth are ordered to offer merchandise that will satisfy these regulations, so the people will have no excuse for buying more expensive fabrics in violation of the law.

Anyone found violating these regulations must forfeit the prohibited apparel to His Majesty the King.
