The Cathedral Steps

Tribute from Lord Miyamoto Omori

Most Esteemed Sensei:

I am greatly honored at your request that I return to the Hagashi Dojo to address the fine young noblemen in whom you are instilling the code of conduct that has made you a great samurai.

Forgive me that I am at present unable to leave my estate on Kyushu. I remain on the alert, as rumors of another Mongol invasion have reached our shores. Last week, I and my company were victorious against a small company of Mongol raiders. These fools were so clumsy in their approach that I had time to burn incense in my helmet before engaging them.

During the skirmish, I myself killed two opponents. The first was filled with terror at the sight of the demon on my face mask. His fear betrayed his sword arm and gained me victory. The second, though outmatched, fought on until I crippled him. I praised him for his bravery before cutting his head from his body. In all, my company collected seven heads that day. They now adorn the gates of my manor house.

Please know that I reflect with great fondness on my years under your firm tutelage. My success as a samurai I owe entirely to your wisdom and excellent example.

Your respectful student,

Lord Miyamoto Omori
