Count Floyd's Video Dungeon

In response to last issue's Video Dungeon I received an e-mail from Phaet 56 who really enjoyed Evil Dead 2. I also enjoyed "Evil Dead 2" because it is the birthplace of one of my favorite characters, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell. Ash goes on to kick some royal bee-hind in Army of Darkness aka "Evil Dead 3". The entire "Evil Dead" series is excellent scary scary entertainment.

Evil Dead, released in 1983, was directed by Sam Raimi. This low budget film showed great inventiveness. In fact, Sam Raimi is one of my favorite directors. The film deals with 5 college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in the boondocks. They come across a book of incantations and by reading them thus conjur up demons who turn the students into evil monsters.

Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn was released in 1987. This film was more a remake than it was a sequel but it outdid the first film in fun and gore. Our hero, Ash, is infected with the evil mung that starts to transform his hand into something hideous. He decides to chop off the offending hand and he then goes on a rampage of revenge against the demons. It is at this point that the "Ash" that I know and love truly comes into his own as a slayer of demons.

Army of Darkness: Evil Dead 3 came out in 1992. This third installment finds Ash being sucked into a vortex at the cabin and he finds himself deposited in the 14th century. Not to fear, his chainsaw and his shotgun survive the trip along with other items that come in handy in the later parts of the film. To get back to his own time Ash must recover the book on incantations. Along the way he must do battle with all types of scary entities. He then unwittingly unleashes an army of skeletons. He teaches the people to fight back this army using modern techniques. The film is done with tongue in cheek violence. Sam Raimi truly knows how to package and choreograph the action on the part of his actors as well as his excellent camera moves. Of course having a musical score by Danny Elfman is icing on the cake.

I wholeheartedly recommend: Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn and Army of Darkness for your scary scary needs. AAAaawwoooo!
