General ---------- We do not anticipate you will have any problems using this CD-ROM. However, you should check the following items if an error does occur: a) Make sure the correct CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM drive. You cannot use the GROLIER MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA unless it is in the CD-ROM drive. b) Verify that your equipment meets or exceeds the listed System Requirements. c) Ensure that you are not running any other applications in the background. d) Try a different video display resolution. For example: if you run Windows in 800x600 256 colors, try 640x480 in 256 colors. e) Try to obtain the most recent drivers for your video card and CD-ROM drive. The positive effect this has can be profound. f) If you have display problems, but meet the stated system requirements, and have obtained the most recent drivers, you can try the following: Modify the file "qtw.ini" located on your hard drive in the "Windows" directory. If the file does not contain the following two lines, add them to the file and restart Windows: [VIDEO] Optimize=Driver If this fails, you should try replacing the word "Driver" with "BMP" (do not enter the quote marks). You can also try "RAW" and "DIB" in place of "Driver". g) If you have a problem which you have not been able to resolve, you should reinstall the GME. 2. Problems with specific video cards: ------------------------------------- a) ATI Mach64 video card Users of this video card may encounter problems when using the GME. This can be resolved by adding a line to the [macx] section of your SYSTEM.INI file. The line you add to the [macx] section should read: DeviceBitmap=OFF b) Trident and Headland Technologies VGA cards Modify the file "qtw.ini" located on your hard drive in the Windows directory. If the file does not contain the following two lines, add them to the file and restart Windows: [VIDEO] Optimize=BMP 3. Horizontal Scroll Bar: ------------------------ When an open window extends off the edge of your screen, a horizontal scroll bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. If this scroll bar appears and covers something you need to see (such as video controls), you can move the partially obscured window by clicking on its Title Bar and dragging it to a better location. 5. Windows 95 issues: -------------------- a) Memory is Low; System Resources are Low This problem can be resolved by changing the size of your virtual memory. Click Start on the Task Bar, then Settings, Control Panel. Select System, then Performance, then Virtual Memory. Choose the option button which will let you control the size of the swapfile. Set the lower limit for 4 and the upper limit to 10. After the changes are made, you will be prompted to restart your computer. You will need to restart for the changes to take place. b) Launching the Word Processor To return to your word processor once you have opened it from the GME95 Tools menu, you will need to select it from the Windows 95 Task Bar or use the key combination. If you select Word Processor from the Tools menu a second time, then a second copy of the word processor will be opened. 6. If you need to contact Technical Support: ------------------------------------------- This CD-ROM was obtained as part of a hardware bundle. The correct number for technical support can be obtained in one of two places: 1. The Technical Support number is located on the first "Help" screen. (Click on "Help" then select "Contents") 2. The Technical Support number can also be obtained by looking at the filenames listed in the "Ident" subdirectory of the CD-ROM. You will see a filename that looks like a telephone number. This is the number to call for technical support.
