Create a new document and draw a small circuit

This Quick Start tutorial will use this example circuit



If you wish to follow along with the steps of this tutorial, you can either load the file QuickStart1.crc from the Tutorials\QuickStart directory, or you can draw the circuit yourself by following the steps below.

When you have loaded, or drawn, the circuit you can proceed to the Next Page



Create a new document

  1. To create a new document, select New from the File menu, or click the New button in the Main Toolbar.




Insert New Components - General Procedure

To insert new components into a circuit document:
  1. Select the desired component from the Components Toolbar


  2. The mouse cursor will change to the Insert Cursor . Insert components into the circuit with a click, drag, and release. The component's first end point will be placed where the mouse button was clicked and the second end point will be placed where the mouse button was released.



Edit Component Parameters - General Procedure

To edit component parameters:
  1. Position the mouse cursor over the center of the component. The cursor will change to indicate that it is over the component's center:


  2. With the cursor in this position, double click the left mouse button. A special dialog box will open and allow the component's parameters to be edited. Here is the dialog box that opens when you double click a resistor


    There is an edit field for the label of the component "r1", an edit field for the value of the component, a selection list to select the units of the component's value, and two radio buttons to choose which side of the component the label and/or value is displayed on.



Step by step creation of the example circuit

  1. Create a new document, as described above.

  2. Select Voltage Source from the Components Toolbar and insert a Voltage Source, as described above, so that it is oriented vertically with the positive polarity at the top.

  3. Double click the center of the new Voltage Source to edit its parameters. Change the label of this source to "Vin" and change the position of the label with the dialog box shown here:


    The Voltage Source will look like this:


  4. Select Resistor from the Components Toolbar and insert an horizontal Resistor with one end attached to the top of the Voltage Source, Vin. Edit the parameters of the Resistor and change its value to "1" and set its units to "Kohm".


  5. Select Capacitor . Insert a new Capacitor and edit its parameters so that it is like the one shown here:


  6. Select Wire . Insert a new Wire so that it is like the one shown here:


  7. Select Inductor . Insert a new Inductor and edit its parameters so that it is like the one shown here:


  8. Select Ground . Insert new Ground symbols at the bottoms of the Voltage Source, the Capacitor, and the Inductor. Ground Symbols are inserted by clicking, dragging the mouse in the direction that that you want the symbol to point, and then releasing the mouse button.


  9. Select Voltage Tag . Voltage Tags are special components that associate a label with a voltage signal that exists between two nodes of a circuit. We wish to have a label for the voltage across the Inductor. To insert the Voltage Tag, place the mouse cursor near the top end point of the Inductor, press and hold the left mouse button, drag the mouse down until it is near the bottom end point of the Inductor, and release the mouse button. To edit the Voltage Tag's parameters, double click near the point between the '+' and '-' signs. Change the Voltage Tag's label to "Vout".
