I want to maintain disk information

If your computer crashes, or disk information becomes corrupted, you can more easily rebuild the disk or recover the data if you routinely back up data and maintain critical configuration information for your disks.

I want to view or print a report about the configuration of a hard disk on my computer

You can use DiskMap to print configuration reports from the command prompt.

Show me a brief overview of DiskMap.

I want to plan a Windows 2000 storage management strategy

For a guide to planning how to implement data storage in Windows 2000, see "Determining Windows 2000 Storage Management Strategies" in Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Deployment Planning Guide.

I want to know what backups and configuration information I should be maintaining

For a conceptual overview of storage management and troubleshooting in Windows 2000, see "Disk Concepts and Troubleshooting" and "Data Storage and Management" under "Storage, File Systems, and Printing" in Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Server Operations Guide.

I want to save critical hard-disk information

Another useful disk management tool, Dskprobe.exe: DiskProbe, is included in the Windows 2000 Support Tools. DiskProbe is a sector editor that enables you to edit, save and copy data on the physical hard drive. With it, you can prepare for disk problems by saving critical disk structures before problems arise.

You can install the Support Tools from the \Support\Tools folder on the Windows 2000 operating system CD.

I want to create or update my Emergency Repair Disk

The Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) feature of Windows 2000 enables you to save information about your current system settings on a floppy disk and use this disk to repair your computer if system files are damaged or erased.

For information about the ERD and other system repair features of Windows 2000, see the "Repair overview" topic (indexed under "Emergency Repair Disk, overview") in the Windows 2000 online Help.
