Before Running DH

Before using Dh.exe, the following procedures should be performed on your computer:

1. Back up your registry settings.
2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe)
   

    

   

   Caution

   Do not use a registry editor to edit the registry directly unless you have no alternative. The registry editors bypass the standard safeguards provided by administrative tools. These safeguards prevent you from entering conflicting settings or settings that are likely to degrade performance or damage your system. Editing the registry directly can have serious, unexpected consequences that can prevent the system from starting and require that you reinstall Windows 2000. To configure or customize Windows 2000, use the programs in Control Panel or Microsoft Management Console (MMC) whenever possible.

3. From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:

   SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

4. Change the value of the GlobalFlag entry to 23000. For example:

   GlobalFlag:REG_DWORD:0X00023000

    

   

   Note

   By default, this value is ZERO or 0x00000000.

5. Ensure the following flags are enabled. Gflags.exe (a tool included with the Windows 2000 Support Tools) lets you easily change these flags.

• Enable debugging of the Win32 subsystem
• Create user mode stack DB
• Create kernel mode stack DB
• Enable loading of kernel debugger symbols

  Note The enabled value of all flags is 00023000

• Click OK and quit the Registry Editor.
• If you have a checked build of Windows, install the checked symbol table files into the %WINDIR% directory.

   

  

  Note

  Symbol table files must match the version of the image from which they were made. Your Windows 2000 CD contains these files in the \support\debug <platform>\symbols directory. If you install a service pack, you must also install the updated symbol table files.

• Shutdown and restart the computer.
• After restarting, open a command prompt and type the following command to set the location of the symbol files:

  SET _NT_SYMBOL_PATH=C:\%WINDIR%

After this is completed, you can run DH.

Using DH

Use the -p 0 option to display a list of all Windows kernel objects in the system along with all handles to those objects for each process.

Note

Global flag settings still apply when using DH.
