Whether it's emails, web pages or Microsoft Office documents, digital photos or music, it's always extremely easy to find new files to save on your PC. The problem comes in finding them again later. All too often you're relying on multiple tools, like the Find option in your email client, an image organiser, maybe Media Player and Windows Search, all of which work differently, and none of them deliver exactly what you need.
exalead one:desktop aims to offer you a simpler life. It indexes just about everything on your hard drive, from emails to contacts (Outlook Express 5/6, Outlook 2000/ XP/ 2003 or Mozilla Thunderbird), Microsoft Office documents like Word, Excel or PowerPoint, and common formats like PDF, RTF, OpenOffice and HTML. Enter a keyword contained in any matching files and they'll instantly be displayed. You can then view them in a preview window, so there's no need to open the original application only to find out you've got the wrong file.
That's just the start, though. The program also indexes images, audio and video files, using tags and metadata where available. So you can use it to pull up a particular set of MP3 files, say, then play the ones you like, or maybe locate all the digital photos of your last holiday, then display them with thumbnail previews.
exalead one:desktop also suggests the correct spelling of misspelled search terms, and allows for approximate or "fuzzy" searches if that's not quite enough. It comes with a stack of advanced search features (Boolean and proximity operators, regular expression support, suffix and prefix search). And all these features can be used to search your PC, the web, or both, from the very same interface: a real time-saver.
