It only takes a moment. Choose the wrong menu option, click "Yes" instead of "No", type a file name you've used before, it doesn't really matter. The consequences are the same: your valuable file has been deleted, and if you're not prepared then there's a definite possibility that you're not going to get it back.
Install File Recover, though, and there's no need to worry. Just launch the program, and if you know the specific file you're after, choose the Advanced Scan option and enter its name. Select the file extension, too, click Scan and it'll browse through your folders, looking for records of deleted files. If you've run File Recover immediately after the file is wiped, then there's very little chance it will have been overwritten yet, and recovery shouldn't be a problem.
Sometimes you might not notice a key file has been lost for days, perhaps even weeks, though, and the longer the time that's elapsed, the more difficult recovery becomes. But don't give up: it's surprising just how much File Recover can restore. Choose the Deep Scan option, for instance, and it can look for and recover specific file types, even if their original reference in the NTFS master file table was overwritten long ago.
The program makes it easy to restore specific files, too, letting you search by name, extension and size. It comes with a file viewer, handy for checking that you really are restoring the right file. And while it's mostly used to recover data from hard drives, support for the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems, as well as NTFS, mean File Recover works just as well with floppies, memory cards, USB flash drives and other fixed media.
