The
RAM Optimization
Windows XP does use a
special memory management system to get more memory from the system for
applications. As soon as the available physical memory is totally used, Windows
starts to swap parts of the RAM to a file - usually called 'pagefile.sys' that is
stored somewhere on any of your harddrives. This makes it possible to run more
applications you usually could run using only your physical memory.
Several things could cause the operating system not to manage the available
memory as optimized as possible, such as very large programs, program crashes,
memory holes, a lot of background programs etc.
Give it a try: start a lot of
applications, games, etc. It does not take very long until Windows comes up
with such an error message:

What now?
- You
may close some applications, but most of the time this will not fix the problem,
'cause Windows does not reorganize the RAM totally. Parts of those
programmes will stay in memory.
- You
may reboot your machine or re-start Windows. That means: save all your work,
close all programmes, rebooting, restart Windows, restart all programs,
reload all your files and after a couple of minutes you got the same
problem: NOT ENOUGH MEMORY !
-
You can use the RAM Optimization feature of Tweak-XP !

The current RAM situtaion is
displayed in the 'Current memory situation' frame. By clicking the 'Optimize
RAM' button Tweak-XP will start to reorganize your physical RAM - cleaning
unused parts and setting free as much RAM as possible. Tweak-XP will occupy a
lot of your physical RAM and release it immediately. As soon as the optimization
has finished, you'll notice more free RAM than before. The amount of free RAM
will be optimized if you reorganize your physical memory several times. If you're interested in a
standalone RAM Optimization software, please visit http://www.totalidea.de
for the WinRAM-Booster product series offering more features, an automatic RAM
optimization function and a lot more !
Please
remember that the optimization of your RAM will take a few seconds
and that your harddisc control light may blink during optimization !
Optimization
Settings:
-
Don't
optimize the RAM when CPU is too busy: if
this option is enabled, a RAM optimization command will be canceled on a
busy CPU (if you're saving a file or doing any other CPU intensive
procedure). This option was included for security reasons. Please do always
enable this feature.
-
Clear the
Clipboard on every optimization of the RAM:
this option will clear the clipboard in which you can store text, files or
any other data. The clearing will be done during a RAM optimization
procedure.
-
Force Windows
to unload DLL's from memory: Windows
Explorer will usually try and cache DLL's by keeping them in memory even
after the application using them has been closed. This can cause performance
problems on low memory systems, and can be annoying when developing on
Windows and the DLL's remain in use.
-
Let me
specify how much memory to reorganize:
regulary Tweak-XP will use half of the amount of your physical RAM for a RAM
optimization - on a 128 MB RAM system this will be 64 MB). This amount DOES
NOT stand for the value you can expect to be set free - it is just the
amount of RAM that will be occupied and released by Tweak-XP. Windows XP
reacts different on each RAM optimization command. We suggest you leave this
option disabled or set it to half of the amount of your physical RAM.
