DHCP

Dynamic host configuration protocol can be used for assigning IP addresses to the client machines. You will need a DHCP server on your network. One is available in Windows NT and 2000. Many routers are provided with their own DHCP server.

When a DHCP server is configured to assign IP addresses to the client machines, and the client machines are configured to get an IP address from the server, there will be no need for a hosts file. The operating system of the client machines resolve the name of the machine into an IP address using the DHCP server database.

For information on setting up and configuring a DHCP server, please refer to your Windows documentation or the documentation for the Router you wish to use as a DHCP server.

Note: Not all Routers are provided with a DHCP server facility. Contact your hardware supplier for more information.
