The more sophisticated speakers, with built-in amplifiers and volume and tone controls mounted on them, are preferable to simpler non-amplified models. The sound is superior and it's far easier to  get the sound just right by using physical controls rather than software ones. Amplified speakers can typically output between 4 to 40 watts each.
